What is Leaky Gut?
The gut plays an integral part in our overall health. In addition to breaking down food and absorbing nutrients, it acts as a protective barrier, controlling what enters the bloodstream. This important function can be severely compromised by a condition called “leaky gut,” which occurs when bacteria and other harmful toxins inadvertently pass through the intestinal walls. Once these toxins enter the bloodstream, they can cause several adverse reactions in the body.
Leaky Gut Symptoms
Traditional medicine doesn’t recognize leaky gut as an actual condition or health concern, but there is mounting evidence that many of the foods we eat can damage the gut over time, which could lead to a variety of health issues. Alcohol, artificial sweeteners, soda, food additives, fried foods, junk food and some medications are all potential causes of leaky gut.
A recent study published in the JAMA Internal Medicine Journal found that individuals who drank two or more glasses of sugar sweetened soft drinks had a higher risk of dying from digestive orders, and those who drank the same amount of diet drinks had higher risks of dying from cardiovascular disease.1 These issues all stem from leaky gut syndrome.
Symptoms of leaky gut syndrome can include any of the following:
- Bloating
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Skin problems (rashes, acne, eczema, etc.)
- Joint pain
- Headaches
- Difficulty staying focused
- Inflammation
Signs of leaky gut can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are so varied. In addition, people may be hesitant to believe their health issues (such as headaches or joint pain) can be traced to problems with their gut. More than 2000 years ago, Hippocrates recognized this possibility and said “all disease begins in the gut.” This means many of our health issues can be traced back to gastro-intestinal issues like leaky gut. Instead of just focusing on the symptoms, it’s important to look deeper and determine what is causing the issue in the first place.
What are Digestive Enzymes?
Digestive enzymes play an important role in the gut and healthy digestion. They assist in breaking down the food we eat, including the fats, proteins, carbs and other nutrients, allowing them to be easily absorbed. A lack of digestive enzymes can cause problems with digestion, which could lead to a myriad of problems, such as irritable bowel disease, lactose intolerance, and leaky bowel syndrome. It’s important to stop this negative chain reaction before it starts.
There are four types of digestive enzymes: proteases, lipases, amylases, and nucleases. Each have their own specific roles but work together in unison to keep the body (and gut) healthy. Consistently eating foods that are unhealthy can damage these enzymes over time, increasing the risk of having leaky gut and other gastrointestinal issues.

Summary
Many of our health issues can be traced back to the gut. Even though leaky gut isn’t recognized by traditional medicine as an actual ailment, bacteria and toxins “leaking” thorough the intestinal wall can wreak havoc on our bodies.
Many people who experience these symptoms (such as headaches, constipation and even joint pain) will seek out treatments and remedies that focus primarily on alleviating the symptoms to feel better.
This may be helpful in the short term, but will eventually prove to be ineffective over time, because the root cause of the issue is never identified. In many instances, a weak intestinal wall and leaky gut is the culprit, but will never be identified.
By looking at the bigger picture and making our gut health a top priority, we are one step closer to good health. If you’re suffering from any of the symptoms listed above, try one of these products today. Your body will thank you.
