Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, helps with brain function, helps the body convert protein to energy, and plays a role in the production of some hormones and neurotransmitters. Research has shown that vitamin B6 works with folic acid and B12 to reduce levels of homocysteine (an amino acid) in the blood.

What is vitamin B6?

Vitamin B6 is also called pyridoxine but also exists as pyridoxal and pyridoxamine, and as their phosphorylated derivatives pyridoxine 5-phosphate, pyridoxal 5-phosphate, and pyridoxamine 5-phosphate. It is involved in the synthesis of neurotransmitters and nucleic acids, and in the metabolism of amino acids.

What is vitamin B6 used for?

Vitamin B6, in conjunction with folic acid and vitamin B12, is used by the body to reduce levels of homocysteine and therefore supports the cardiovascular system. It plays an active role in supporting the immune system and is important to brain and nerve function. Cell receptivity to hormones is enhanced by vitamin B6. It has been used to treat nausea and vomiting of pregnancy and to treat carpal tunnel syndrome in those who were deficient in this nutrient.
